Chinese Shar Pei...

The Chinese Shar Pei most distinctive feature is deep wrinkles. The Shar Pei breed comes from the Guangzhou province of China where it was well-known as a fighting and guard dog. Originally though, it was an all-purpose companion/herding dog of poorer farmers and had fewer wrinkles. The name literally translates to "Sand Skin," not because of their colours, but because of their texture. The Shar-pei tends to have a stubborn nature, often requiring lots of attention. An easy going breed, the Chinese Shar-Pei is a dog that can be friendly when well socialized, but can also be fiercely independent and aloof. The Shar-pei breed is devoted to their families, and often becomes especially attached to just one person.

The Chinese Shar Pei comes in two varieties. The grooming requirements for the Chinese Shar-Pei are low. The coats of both are short and harsh and should be regularly brushed. The "horse" coat, or the shorter version, tends to shed solely during molting periods but may require daily brushing and weekly bathing during this time. The "bush" coat, or the slightly longer version, lightly sheds throughout the year. However, you should take care to check and clean the folds of the skin as well as the ears for hygiene and health reasons.
