Flat Coated Retriever...

The Flat-Coated Retriever was developed in the 1800's by crossing several already established breeds, including the Irish Setter, Labrador, Water Dog, and the St. John's Newfoundland. The Flat Coated Retriever was developed as a land retriever and evolved into a fine water and land retriever much favoured by gamekeepers. Flat-coats are very intelligent and quick to learn. The Flat-Coated Retriever is a sweet, friendly, lively dog that is always on the lookout for play. Friendly toward other dogs, pets, strangers and children, this retriever makes an excellent companion.

The Flat-Coated Retriever is an average shedder with a feathered-looking coat. Though some minor trimming may be required, grooming is fairly easy and just requires a weekly brushing. Flat-coated Retrievers require daily brushing to maintain their coats, particular attention should be paid to the feathers which may collect debris and their feet should be checked for dried mud or other foreign matter. The eyes, ears and teeth should be checked on a regular basis. To keep their feathered coat free of mats, Flat Coated Retrievers require regular brushing and combing, and occasional trimming.
