This European breed actually originated in France, and has been popular in many European countries for many centuries. Lively, affectionate, cheerful, sociable, and intelligent are just a few of the words that can be used to describe the Löwchen, which has also become known as the Lion Dog. A well socialized Löwchen will get along well with children, providing that they are gentle and considerate, and will also get along well with other pets.

The front legs and hind quarters of the Löwchen are generally clipped, and this is what gives the breed the distinctive appearance that earns it the nickname of the Lion Dog. The coat of the Löwchen needs to be regularly brushes and combed in order to stop the coat from tangling and matting. You should also brush out dead hair regularly. The Löwchen has a soft, silky coat that sheds little to no hair, making it a good breed for people prone to allergies. The rest of the hair needs to be brushed daily to prevent tangles. Also, because the skin of the Löwchen can easily burn, the clipped areas require sunscreen.
