The Redbone Coonhound originates from Georgia, USA and was bred originally for hunting raccoons and small game. Descendents of Foxhounds, the Redbone Coonhound was first bred to have a hotter nose and be a faster worker than its forebears. The Redbone Coonhound is even-tempered at home but an aggressive hunter. The Redbone Coonhound is active, alert, and self confident, and is good with children. The Redbone Coonhounds need to be exercised daily. Because of their high endurance level, they are a great dog to take on long walks, jogs or hiking.

The Redbone Coonhound's coat is normally a solid shade of red. The Redbone Coonhound is a light shedder with a soft, shiny coat of fine, short hair. Minimal grooming is required as an occasional brushing will suffice. Special attention is required for its ears, teeth and eyes. They should be regularly checked and kept clean. They need to be bathed and brushed occasionally.
